Steam Distilled / Distillation extraction is the most commonly used method for the extraction of essential oils from aromatic plants.
In this method, the plant parts (flowers, leaves, sawdust, resin, root bark, etc.) containing aromatic substances are put into a big tank (distillation tank), and the bottom of the tank is heated or steam is feeded. When the hot steam is filled in the tank, the aromatic essential oil in the plant evaporates with the vapour, and finally comes into the tank as the steam passes through the condenser. The condenser is a spiral tube surrounded by cold water to cool the steam into an oil-water mixture, which then flows into the oil-water separator. The oil lighter than water will float on the surface, and the oil heavier than water will sink to the bottom of the water. The remaining water is pure dew. Then separate the essential oil and the dew with a separating funnel.
