Matt paint making machine is an integrated modular processing system engineered for the batch and continuous manufacturing of low-gloss, flat, and matte architectural coatings, industrial matt topcoats, waterborne latex matt paints, solvent-borne matt enamels, and functional matte finishes. Unlike general-purpose coating production equipment, this system is optimised to stabilise matting agents, control pigment flocculation, regulate film surface micro-roughness, and deliver consistent gloss level (typically 0–15 GU at 60° gloss angle), which defines the core performance of matt coating systems. It covers unit operations including gravimetric batching, powder wetting, high-shear dispersion, fine grinding, letdown, tinting, homogenisation, online viscosity monitoring, filtration and automatic filling, and is widely deployed in coating plants for interior wall matt paint, exterior weather-resistant matt coatings, furniture PU matt lacquer, anti-glare industrial primer and other matte coating formulations.
Core System Configuration
A standard matt paint manufacturing train consists of interconnected process skids with corrosion-resistant wetted parts, normally SUS304 or SUS316L stainless steel, compliant with coating GMP and chemical process safety specifications.
Raw Material Batching & Feeding Module This section includes loss-in-weight powder feeders, liquid metering pumps, mass flow meters, dust containment hoods and vacuum powder conveying lines. Solid fractions such as titanium dioxide, calcium carbonate, kaolin, talc, silica matting agent and rheological additives are fed gravimetrically; liquid phases including acrylic emulsion, solvent, coalescent, dispersant, wetting agent, biocide and pH adjuster are dosed volumetrically or gravimetrically. Closed transfer design suppresses airborne dust and prevents cross-contamination between different colour batches and gloss grades, which is critical because uneven matting-agent addition will cause mottling, gloss variation and surface defect on dried matt film.
High-Shear Disperser (Pre-Dispersion Station) Equipped with a frequency-controlled drive and a Cowles sawtooth impeller, the high-speed dissolver operates at adjustable peripheral tip speed ranging from 15 m/s to 25 m/s. It generates hydrodynamic shear, turbulence and cavitation to incorporate dry powders into the liquid vehicle, displace entrapped air on pigment and extender surfaces, and disintegrate soft agglomerates to form a homogeneous millbase slurry. VFD (variable frequency drive) enables shear profiling: low speed for charging and blending, high shear for wetting and deagglomeration, and intermediate speed for stabilisation. Jacketed vessel structure supports heat exchange to control exothermic dispersion and avoid premature latex destabilisation or matting-agent aggregation under overheating conditions.
Fine Milling Unit For formulations demanding high hiding power and uniform matte appearance, horizontal bead mill, vertical basket mill or pin-type media mill is integrated downstream of the disperser. Zirconia milling beads serve as grinding media to apply impact, compression and shear forces on the millbase, reducing particle size and narrowing particle size distribution, targeting D₉₀ below 5 μm for architectural matt paint and submicron fineness for high-end industrial matt topcoat. A dynamic centrifugal separator separates grinding media from slurry; continuous jacket cooling removes frictional heat to keep process temperature within formulation limits. Over-milling must be strictly avoided, as excessive comminution of silica matting fillers will alter surface micro-topography and raise gloss unexpectedly.
Letdown & Homogenisation Tank After milling, the concentrated millbase is transferred to the letdown vessel for formulation completion. Binder latex, thickener, matting slurry, defoamer, levelling agent and pH modifier are metered sequentially under low-to-medium agitation. An inline high-shear homogeniser or rotor-stator mixer is commonly fitted to achieve fine distribution of matting particles without re-agglomeration. Online sensors monitor Brookfield viscosity, pH value and temperature in real time for closed-loop trimming, which stabilises sag resistance, flow behaviour and final gloss uniformity across batches.
Post-Processing & Auxiliary Skids This module comprises bag filter or cartridge filter assembly for gel and grit removal, product transfer centrifugal pumps, colour tinting station with micro-dosing, vacuum deaeration unit to eliminate pinhole and crater defects, and automatic filling capping line. A central PLC HMI system archives batch recipes, process parameters, alarm logs and quality test records for traceability and recipe replication. Explosion-proof configuration is mandatory for solvent-based matt paint variants to meet ATEX hazardous area classification.
Working Principle & Process Sequence
The production workflow follows a well-established coating process route tailored for matt systems:
Premix & Wetting: Liquid carrier and dispersant are loaded into the disperser tank; extenders, pigments and matting agents are added gradually under controlled shear to achieve sufficient surface wetting.
High-shear Pre-dispersion: Mechanical shear breaks loose agglomerates and forms pumpable millbase slurry.
Media Milling: Particle size reduction to reach the required fineness and tinting strength.
Letdown Stage: Dilute millbase with film-forming binder, add functional additives and matting agent complement; adjust rheology and pH. This is the most critical stage for matt paint, where shear intensity must be moderated to preserve the delicate dispersion state of matting silica.
Homogenisation & Deaeration: Eliminate micro-bubbles and homogenise the whole system.
Filtration, QC Sampling and Filling: Inspect fineness, viscosity, 60° gloss, hiding power and storage stability before packaging.
The fundamental difference between matt paint production and gloss paint production lies in shear management and matting agent dispersion control. Gloss coatings require compact, closely packed pigment surfaces; matt paint relies on uniformly distributed micro-filler protrusions that diffuse incident light and suppress specular reflection. Improper shear or poor matting-agent dispersion results in patchy gloss, haze, sedimentation, poor scrub resistance and inconsistent colour yield.
Key Technical Characteristics
Gloss Consistency Control: Recipe-locked shear curves and staged addition of matting additives minimise gloss drift batch to batch.
Wide Viscosity Adaptation: Capable of processing low-viscosity clear matt lacquer, medium-viscosity latex matt paint and high-viscosity textured matt paste.
Modular Scalability: Available from lab-scale 50 L pilot unit, semi-automatic 500–2000 L batch line, to fully continuous multi-tonne industrial production plant.
Material Compatibility: Wetted components compatible with waterborne, solvent-borne, 1K and 2K crosslinkable matt coating systems.
Process Traceability: Recipe management, parameter logging and interlock protection prevent misoperation and formula deviation.
Environmental Adaptation: Optional closed solvent recovery, dust extraction and wastewater pre-treatment packages for low-VOC matt coating manufacturing.
Quality Control Indicators Linked to Machine Performance
The performance of matt paint making machine directly governs these finished coating indices: Hegman fineness, Brookfield/KU viscosity, storage stability (settling and syneresis), 60-degree gloss value, contrast ratio/hiding power, scrub resistance, film levelling, sag resistance and anti-flocculation stability of matting particles. Inadequate shear leads to coarse grit and high local gloss; excessive high shear in the letdown stage may cause silica matting agent re-flocculation and gloss fluctuation. Therefore, modern matt paint production lines adopt segmented shear control rather than a single high-shear operation throughout the whole batch cycle.
Application Scope
This equipment platform supports manufacturing of water-based interior flat matt latex paint, exterior acrylic matt coating, PU matte wood lacquer, epoxy matt primer, anti-reflection matt functional coating, alkyd matt enamel and other low-gloss coating products. It serves architectural coating factories, furniture coating manufacturers, general industrial finishing plants and special functional coating developers.
Maintenance & Operational Notes
Critical maintenance items include inspection of mechanical seal on disperser and bead mill, wear monitoring of impeller, grinding rotor and separation ring, regular calibration of gravimetric feeders and online viscometers, and CIP (clean-in-place) procedure between colour or formula change to avoid cross-contamination. Operators must strictly follow shear-rate curves and matting-agent feeding sequence defined in each recipe. Regular cleaning prevents hard sediment buildup inside tanks and pipelines, which may slough off and form specks in the final matt film.
Outlook
With tightening low-VOC and environmental regulations, the next-generation matt paint making machine evolves toward continuous inline dispersion, intelligent AI-assisted gloss prediction, fully enclosed powder transfer and zero-solvent emission design. Integrated inline particle size analysers and gloss sensors enable real-time closed-loop adjustment, reducing manual sampling and rework rate for high-specification matt coating batches.
