Technical Introduction to Textured Paint Mixing Tank

A textured paint mixing tank is a specialised industrial process vessel engineered for batching, homogenisation and blending of textured architectural coatings, also known as texture coatings, stone-like coatings, granular decorative paints and aggregate-containing slurry systems. Distinguished from conventional liquid paint dispersing tanks designed for pigment deagglomeration and low-solids latex formulation, this unit is optimised for heterogeneous suspensions loaded with rigid, abrasive granular fillers including quartz aggregate, silica sand, ceramic microspheres, coloured mineral chips and lightweight extenders. Its core design objective is to achieve uniform spatial distribution of particulate aggregates within the aqueous binder matrix while preventing particle sedimentation, segregation, attrition and binder phase separation throughout the entire batch cycle.
Textured paint systems are highly shear-sensitive and rheology-dependent. Excessive high shear will fracture decorative aggregates and degrade the final surface texture; insufficient bulk convection leads to rapid settling of dense solids and inconsistent film build, texture pattern and colour consistency across batches. Accordingly, the textured paint mixing tank adopts a combined low-speed bulk agitation and controlled moderate-shear dispersion architecture, rather than relying solely on high-speed Cowles dissolver blades used for flat paints and varnishes.

Vessel Body & Material Specification
The tank shell is generally fabricated from AISI 304 or AISI 316L stainless steel, with internal surfaces mechanically polished to Ra ≤ 0.8 μm for easy CIP (clean-in-place) and minimised material adhesion. For heavy-duty abrasive-grade textured paint production, internal wear-resistant hard-facing coating or removable polyurethane liner is optional to mitigate erosive wear caused by circulating mineral aggregates.
Standard geometric configuration is vertical cylindrical vessel with dished bottom or conical hopper bottom. Conical-bottom design facilitates complete discharge of high-density granular slurry and eliminates dead zones where solids accumulate. Removable hinged manway, raw material charging ports, additive feed nozzles, vacuum connection port, exhaust vent, level transmitter interface, temperature sensor socket and sampling valve are integrated on the top cover. Multiple vertical baffles are mounted on the inner wall to suppress rotational vortex, improve axial circulation and reduce air entrainment during feeding and agitation.
Jacketed structure is available for thermal regulation: heating or cooling medium circulates within the jacket to maintain process temperature, stabilise latex binder rheology and control thickener activation rate. All flange connections adopt PTFE gaskets with excellent solvent and alkali resistance, complying with coating industry hygiene and anti-leakage standards.
Agitation System & Working Mechanism
The mainstream configuration is dual-shaft composite agitation system, consisting of a low-speed anchor/ribbon agitator and an auxiliary moderate-shear dispersing impeller.
  1. Low-speed main agitator: Driven by helical gear reducer, operating at 10–40 rpm. Anchor impeller or helical ribbon impeller sweeps the tank wall and bottom continuously, generating large-scale bulk axial and radial flow. It suspends heavy aggregates, overturns high-viscosity slurry and prevents sediment cake formation at the vessel base and side wall boundary layer. Wall-scraping PTFE wiper blades are fitted on the agitator frame to strip stagnant material from inner surfaces.
  2. Auxiliary dispersing shaft: Equipped with modified serrated dispersion disc, running at adjustable moderate speed (typically 200–800 rpm). It delivers localised controlled shear to wet out thickeners, disperse pigment powders and homogenise the binder phase. Rotational speed is strictly limited to avoid crushing decorative mineral granules. Variable-frequency drive (VFD) enables stepless speed regulation according to formulation viscosity, aggregate particle size and batch volume.
Power matching follows slurry apparent viscosity and solid loading. High-solid textured paint batches demand higher torque instead of high peripheral speed. Mechanical seal assembly at shaft penetration adopts double mechanical seal with barrier fluid supply to prevent slurry leakage and air ingress.
Typical Process Sequence
  1. Base charging: Water, acrylic emulsion, coalescent agent, wetting agent and dispersant are metered into the tank; low-speed agitation starts for pre-blending.
  2. Powder feeding: Fillers, titanium dioxide, thickener and rheology modifiers are added gradually under moderate dispersion to achieve full wetting and deagglomeration.
  3. Aggregate incorporation: Quartz sand, coloured stone chips or texture granules are introduced under reduced shear. Only low-speed bulk mixing is activated at this stage to preserve intact particle morphology.
  4. Formulation adjustment: Defoamer, pH regulator, preservative and film-forming auxiliaries are dosed, followed by homogenisation holding.
  5. Quality verification: In-tank sampling for viscosity, density, settlement stability and visual texture inspection.
  6. Discharge: Finished textured paint slurry is transferred via bottom diaphragm pump or screw pump to filtration, screening or filling station.
Core Functional Modules
1. Metering & Feeding Assembly
Gravimetric load-cell weighing system is commonly mounted under tank support legs for accurate batching of liquid and solid raw materials. Pneumatic vacuum powder conveying interface can be configured for closed transfer of fillers to reduce dust emission and VOC escape. Separate additive drip feed ports ensure slow, controlled addition of sensitive rheological additives to avoid local gelation.
2. Instrumentation & Control Package
A complete control system includes VFD units for both agitation shafts, PT100 temperature probe, radar or tuning-fork level sensor, online viscometer option, pressure gauge for jacket circuit, emergency stop interlock and HMI touchscreen. The programmable logic controller stores standard batch recipes, records mixing duration, speed curve, temperature and weighing data for batch traceability. Overload protection is configured for agitator motors to tackle sudden viscosity surge and solid jamming.
3. Cleaning & Auxiliary System
CIP spray balls are installed inside the headspace for automated recirculating cleaning after batch completion. Drain valve, flush port and residue discharge chute are arranged at the lowest point of the cone bottom. For solvent-borne textured coating variants, explosion-proof motor, flame arrester and nitrogen blanketing interface can be supplied to meet ATEX hazardous area classification.
Key Performance Characteristics
  • Aggregate protection: Low-torque bulk mixing principle retains the original grain size distribution and texture appearance, avoiding granule pulverisation which is a common defect from high-speed dispersers.
  • Anti-settling performance: Combined flow field eliminates stagnant zones, improving suspension stability of high-specific-gravity mineral aggregates and extending pot life of finished slurry.
  • Wide rheology adaptability: Capable of processing formulations ranging from medium-viscosity texture primer to high-thixotropy real stone paint, stucco coating and granular putty slurry.
  • Closed operation option: Vacuum-capable configuration suppresses foam generation, reduces air voids in wet film and lowers volatile organic compound emission.
  • Wear-resistance maintainability: Replaceable liners and wiper blades reduce maintenance frequency when processing abrasive mineral aggregates continuously.
Industrial Application Scope
This mixing tank serves production lines for exterior textured wall coatings, real stone paint, stucco texture coating, anti-crack granular putty, decorative aggregate coatings and protective textured heavy-duty coatings. It is widely deployed in coating manufacturing plants for architectural finishing, facade renovation, insulation decorative integrated boards and industrial anti-slip texture coating. It can operate as a standalone batch reactor or integrated into a fully automated continuous batching system linked with upstream raw material silos and downstream screening, deaeration and filling equipment.
Routine Maintenance & Operational Notes
Regular inspection focuses on mechanical seal leakage, wiper blade abrasion, impeller surface erosion by aggregates, reducer lubrication status and calibration of weighing transducers. Operators must strictly follow the speed curve specified for each formulation; high-speed dispersing function shall be locked during aggregate addition. Complete flushing must be carried out immediately after batch discharge to prevent slurry curing and solid scaling inside the vessel, which will compromise agitation efficiency and contaminate subsequent batches. Periodic verification of mixing uniformity is recommended by stratified sampling from top, middle and bottom positions of the tank to monitor segregation tendency.
Development Trend
Current technical evolution targets intelligent rheology closed-loop control, where online viscosity feedback automatically adjusts agitator speed and feeding rate. Wear-resistant alloy impellers, modular skid-mounted design and low-carbon heat recovery jacket systems are gaining adoption. Digital twin batch modelling is also being applied to optimise mixing duration, reduce energy consumption and minimise aggregate breakage rate for high-grade custom textured coatings.
