The vaseline making machine line, also designated as petroleum jelly production plant, is a modular, hygienic processing system engineered for the compounding, homogenization, vacuum deaeration, thermal holding, hot filling and end-of-line packaging of petrolatum-based semisolid formulations. It caters to cosmetic grade, pharmaceutical grade and industrial-grade vaseline, including white petrolatum, yellow petrolatum, medicated ointment bases and blended balm products. The whole line adopts closed-loop thermal circulation, high-shear emulsification and PLC-based distributed control, complying with GMP, CE and ISO sanitation criteria for viscous, thermosensitive hydrocarbon mixtures with strict requirements on cone penetration, melting point, clarity and freedom from entrained air and particulate contaminants.

1. Process Principle & Formulation Logic
Vaseline is a homogeneous blend of refined lubricating base oil and slack wax, calibrated to predefined rheological parameters. The manufacturing workflow centres on controlled melting, phase solubilization, high-shear dispersion, vacuum degassing and isothermal transfer, rather than chemical reaction. Auxiliary additives such as antioxidants, emollients, fat-soluble active ingredients and colorants can be metered and incorporated under inert nitrogen blanketing upon request to inhibit oxidative degradation and eliminate oxidative discoloration during prolonged thermal holding.
Key quality attributes governed inline: cone penetration value, dropping point, kinematic viscosity, volatile loss, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) residue, particulate cleanliness and bubble-free microstructure. All wetted contact parts are fabricated from AISI 316L stainless steel with mirror mechanical polishing, featuring dead-zone-free pipeline routing and CIP (Clean-in-Place) compatibility for cross-batch product changeover and sanitation validation.
2. Line Configuration & Core Unit Description
The complete vaseline making line is divided into five functional modules: raw material feeding & melting module, vacuum homogenization & blending module, intermediate holding & inline filtration module, volumetric hot filling module, and post-filling handling & packaging module.
2.1 Raw Material Melting & Dosing Skid
This module consists of insulated wax melting vessels, base oil storage tanks, jacketed thermal oil heating circuits, positive displacement transfer pumps, Coriolis mass flowmeters and automatic ball valve manifolds. Solid slack wax is charged into the melting tank and heated by closed thermal oil circulation under agitator low-shear agitation to avoid local overheating and thermal cracking. Liquid base stocks are gravimetrically or volumetrically dosed according to batch formula. All vessels are fitted with PT100 temperature transmitters, pressure gauges and over-temperature interlock protection. Heated transfer piping is trace-heated and insulated to prevent premature gelation and viscosity rise before entering the homogenizer reactor.
2.2 Vacuum Homogenizer Emulsifier (Core Reactor Unit)
The vacuum homogenizing vessel is the central processing unit of the line, equipped with a top-mounted anchor frame agitator and bottom-entry high-shear homogenizing head. The anchor agitator delivers bulk laminar mixing for uniform temperature distribution, while the rotor-stator homogenizer generates intense turbulent shear and cavitation to disintegrate wax crystals and disperse the oil-wax phase into a monodisperse, isotropic semisolid matrix. After homogenization, the chamber is pulled to negative pressure by a liquid-ring vacuum pump to execute vacuum deaeration, stripping entrapped microbubbles that would otherwise cause surface blemishes and inconsistent penetration index in finished vaseline. The vessel is maintained under slight vacuum during holding to prevent re-ingress of ambient air. Optional nitrogen purging interface is available for pharma-grade batches to achieve inert atmosphere protection. All operational parameters including homogenizer rotational speed, agitator RPM, set-point temperature, vacuum level and holding duration are logged by the HMI touchscreen for batch record traceability.
2.3 Intermediate Holding Vessel & Inline Filtration Assembly
Discharged petrolatum melt is transferred via heat-traced gear pump to a jacketed holding tank with continuous slow agitation to maintain homogeneous suspension and avoid wax fractionation. Before filling, the stream passes through a basket filter or candle-type fine filter with micron-grade filter media for polishing filtration, removing agglomerated wax nodules and foreign particulates. Differential pressure transmitters across the filter element trigger alarms for cake buildup and prompt filter element replacement, safeguarding downstream filling valve and nozzle from abrasion and blockage.
2.4 Automatic Hot Filling Sub-Line
Vaseline is a thermoplastic semisolid that solidifies upon cooling; therefore hot filling under constant temperature is mandatory. The filling station adopts volumetric piston dosing principle with heated filling cylinders and nozzles. Dosing precision reaches ±1% of set volume, suitable for jars, plastic pots, tins and collapsible tubes across a filling range from 5 mL up to 1000 mL. The filling segment can be configured with bottle unscrambler, infeed conveyor, multi-nozzle synchronous filling, cap feeder, servo capping station, cooling tunnel, inkjet coding, wrap-around labelling machine and shrink bundler. The cooling tunnel employs forced convection chilled air to realize staged, controlled solidification, preventing uneven shrinkage and cavity formation inside the vaseline body. Servo drive architecture supports recipe storage for fast format changeover between different container geometries and batch specifications.
2.5 Control & Safety System
The whole line is orchestrated by a PLC control system with centralized HMI visualization. Interlock logics cover low-level protection, overpressure shutdown, overtemperature cut-off, vacuum failure alarm and pump sequence interlock. It supports manual mode for commissioning and recipe automatic mode for serial production. Data export is available for quality management and audit trails.
3. Key Technical Advantages
Precise rheology control: Combined thermal regulation and staged high-shear homogenization stabilize wax crystal network, ensuring consistent cone penetration and melting point batch to batch.
Vacuum deaeration performance: Effective removal of occluded gas yields defect-free, glossy vaseline without pinholes or voids.
Hygienic design: Sanitary tri-clamp connections, no dead legs, CIP-capable construction reduce cross-contamination risk, adaptable for USP-grade petrolatum manufacture.
Thermal stability management: Full-line heat tracing and insulated circulation eliminate cold spots and material re-solidification during transfer.
Modular scalability: Users can expand the line from lab-scale 50L batch unit to commercial 5000L batch production, and select semi-automatic or fully automatic packaging configurations.
Wide formulation adaptability: Compatible with plain white/yellow vaseline, petroleum jelly ointment, moisturizing balm, rust-proof industrial vaseline and other oil-wax blended semisolids.
